Dim everything except one area of your Mac screen

Focus Spotlight dims the whole screen except a rectangle you draw, so attention stays on one window, one chart or one paragraph. You get it free with Phosphor for Mac.

How to turn it on

Use the Focus Spotlight toggle in the menu bar, the toggle on its card, or the hotkey. After switching it on, drag a rectangle on the screen.

The card also has a Draw new region button and a Clear button.

What you can change

  • Dim amount: 10% to 90%. The default is 50%.
  • The dim amount is saved. Whether Focus Spotlight is on, and the region you drew, are not.

Hotkey

Control+Command+M. Pressing it again while a region is drawn, or while you are drawing one, clears it. The app has no screen for changing it, so it stays fixed.

Permissions

None. Escape works as a normal hotkey, so Focus Spotlight needs no Accessibility or Input Monitoring.

Good to know

  • Everything outside the rectangle is dimmed on that display, and the rectangle stays at normal brightness.
  • Only one region exists at a time. It is on the display that holds your frontmost window when you press the hotkey.
  • Escape clears the region from anywhere, and cancels while you are drawing.
  • A region is never restored after a relaunch.
